Vizag viz. Visakhapatnam; Where hills meet at sea | Part 1

Sunrise in Vizag
22nd September 2016: During Sunrise, Clicked from Hotel Balcony, Vizag

Vizag always fascinates me by its robust offering, this name got almost everything, hills, caves, temples, sea beaches, and some finger licking foods. Very few places in India could make someone experience in a single trip and Vizag is one of those rares.

I have been to different places around Vizag different times. First I heard about this place in my school life, we had an excursion there. Second during my Kolkata - Kanyakumari Ride and last while returning back Kolkata from Bangalore last year.

Although, I admit that I missed a couple of remarkable places there but I am writing this to encourage everyone out there to have a visit at least once in life. If you ever visited, share your experience in the comment box below.

Enough of introduction, let's outline, what we about to discuss here

  1. Park
  2. Temples
  3. Sea Beaches
  4. Museum & Local Attractions
Vizag has some well-known parks, all those are famous for either its structure or its beautiful location.

Kailasagiri: Probably, this one is the most famous point people consider to visit in Vizag. This park located at an elevated height of 173 meters, it also serves a magnificent view of Rishikonda Beach and part of Vizag city. Shiva & Durga sculpture will definitely wonder everyone. For a 360 degree view, we have a toy train and ropeway facility at a very nominal cost. There are few food stalls to have snacks or lunch also.

Vuda Park: VUDA, is something you will see at every corner of the city, it abbreviates Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority. This park, on the seashore, is a gift for us. Children can have their fun and others can see the sea waves, within 5-10 minutes walk, you can reach a lighthouse. Just climb it and amaze yourself.

There are few more parks in Vizag but the above two is famous among tourists and always been maintained properly.

Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha temple: In general, called as Simhachalam temple, is located 500 meters above the sea and approx. 20 Kilometers away from the main city. While one can visit this temple for Darshan purpose but will get a bird’s eye view of the city as a bonus. Truly, despite my multiple visits, I missed this place always due to some unavoidable reasons, but it will on top priority during my next visit.

Ramakrishna Beach: Also refers to RK Beach, is one of the happening, clean and beautiful beach in India. This place becomes the main attraction in the evening. All the tourists enjoy seating here, such good vibes. Whatever a tourist need, this place got, food joints, souvenir shops, attraction points etc. Few major attractions of Vizag (INS Kurusura, matsyadarshini, Vishaka Aircraft museum and memorials) located here, within a kilometer or so.

Rishikonda Beach: This beach is for someone who loves sea bathing. There are stalls to have food or beverages. Selfie lovers can click some cool pictures too. Within a 10 Kilometer from R.K. Beach, this beach feels good to at evening, much less crowd will happy those who love to spend time quietly.

INS Kurusura: If you want to watch real submarine and that too served nation for 31 years, also participated in India - Pakistan war (1971), visit this place. Stop, you have to visit this place, no choice. I believe our visit pays our gratitude towards Marine, especially this submarine. Separate tickets are available for entry, videography etc. You will definitely leave this place with more knowledge.

INS Kurusura

Vishakha Aircraft Museum: This museum is for Aircraft, same as above, this is a must visit point. An audio guide is available at the entrance and the whole museum is well marked to give knowledge of how aircraft ecosystem works. In addition to the knowledge, you can witness real TU 142 aircraft here.

Matsyadarshini: You love marine life, this place is for you. A lot of species demonstrated here, all alive, tickets needed for entry and photography. You can check out below the video.

Fish Harbour: I never visited this place, although some people said, it is a place for fish lovers. Fact is the majority of fish we see in India ships from Vizag, probably from this harbor.

Vishakha Museum: This place showcase many naval equipments for general knowledge, some kid may get inspired to join the Navy in the future.

These are the main attractions in Vizag.

I do not want this post to be boring so our next part will be on Sightseeing (Araku, Bora Caves etc.), foods you must try, the best time to visit Vizag, accommodation, transportation and suggested Itinerary.
